The Crazy Monkey - and the Curious Elephant.
A fable that tells you more about the principles behind our practice.

Once upon a time, in a lush, vibrant jungle teeming with life and the whispers of ancient trees, lived the Crazy Monkey, a creature of marvellous dexterity and wisdom. Unlike other monkeys, who swung swiftly from branch to branch in a simple, carefree manner, Crazy Monkey’s movements were deliberate and full of purpose, weaving through the dense canopy like a skilled dancer.
One bright morning, a curious old elephant wandered into the Crazy Monkey’s domain, captivated by the monkey’s fluid, intricate maneuvers. “Crazy Monkey, why do you move with such intricate care?” The Curious Elephant inquired, his voice rumbling like distant thunder.
With a graceful leap from a towering tree, the Crazy Monkey landed softly near the Curious Elephant and grinned, “Dear Elephant, my movements are guided by a dance of senses: proprioception, interoception, and exteroception.”
Perched on a sturdy branch, the Crazy Monkey continued, “training those senses increases dexterity, the art of managing movements to achieve goals efficiently. Dexterity means knowing not just where my limbs are but how to control them precisely, to change and adapt as the jungle changes around me.”
“Training those senses increases dexterity, the art of managing movements to achieve goals efficiently.”
The Curious Elephant, intrigued, flapped his large ears and urged him to explain further.
“Every twist in the air, every precise grip on a branch, it’s my conversation with the world. Proprioception tells me where each part of my body is, allowing me to execute complex manoeuvres without even looking,” the Crazy Monkey demonstrated by spinning and flipping through the air, his every move precise and intentional.
“Interoception,” he said, touching his chest, “tells me how I feel inside—my heartbeat, the rhythm of my breath. It helps me judge when to exert energy and when to conserve it, making sure I can last through long chases or for quiet moments.”
The Curious Elephant watched, mesmerized as the Crazy Monkey swung with an effortless grace, his movements perfectly aligned with the whispering winds and rustling leaves.
“Then, there’s exteroception,” the Crazy Monkey pointed out, his eyes scanning the horizon. “It connects me to everything outside. The bark’s texture, the branch’s strength, the breeze’s direction, all feed into how I move, react, and survive.”
“Why do they call you the Crazy Monkey?” The Curious Elephant finally asked, his curiosity peaking.
Laughing heartily, the Crazy Monkey swung down, landing beside the Elephant. “Because, in this wise jungle, where many just eat, sleep, and play, I choose to dance through life with full awareness, feeling every moment, learning from each movement. To some, caring this much about moving and feeling might seem crazy, but to me, it’s the true way to experience life.”
“Caring this much about moving and feeling might seem crazy, but to me, it’s the true way to experience life.”
Thus, through the story of the Crazy Monkey, people can learn that dexterity isn’t just about moving, it’s about moving with intention, precision, and adaptability, turning every motion into an opportunity to learn, feel, and connect with the world in deeper, more meaningful ways.
